According to a survey commissioned by Google and conducted by Ipsos, Indian respondents demonstrate greater optimism towards artificial intelligence (AI) compared to individuals from other countries worldwide.
According to findings from a survey commissioned by Google and conducted by IPSOS, a growing number of Indians anticipate favorable outcomes from Artificial Intelligence (AI) in both the immediate future and the long term. 82 per cent of 1,000 surveyed Indian residents over the age of 18 said they expected AI to benefit their lives in the next five years. 70 percent believe they already sense a positive impact of AI, attributing it mainly to new ways to access information.
Survey: The survey revealed that twice as many respondents, who anticipate positive short-term impacts from AI, expressed confidence that it would contribute to “the entire spectrum of development” in the next 25 years. Specifically, 77 percent believe AI will play a role in poverty reduction, while 86 percent foresee improvements in transportation. Additionally, 20 percent of Indian participants identified fostering competition, innovation, and economic growth as a primary government objective concerning AI.
Individuals from the country exhibited notable optimism regarding the impact of AI on employment. Specifically, 80 percent expressed confidence in its individual benefits. Intriguingly, respondents from Singapore, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates echoed this sentiment in similar proportions.
Globally, about 65 percent of the respondents have talked about AI in their workplace, while in India, that number is 95 percent. India also had the highest percentage of individuals who expressed optimism regarding the changes brought about by AI. In contrast, this figure was lower, at 29 percent, for the United States, and approximately 52 percent globally.
Almost half of the Indian participants highlighted the importance of prioritizing a “safe” approach to AI, while roughly a third emphasized innovation as the primary focus. Moreover, Indians displayed considerable trust in both technology companies and the government to ensure this. A striking 82 percent suggested collaboration between the government and tech firms to foster AI development.
IPSOS carried out the study for Google between October 19 and November 6, 2023. They selected 17,000 adults from 17 countries including India and the respondents were interviewed online using Ipsos panels.
